Maitland Crows Cup Girls Footy

On Tuesday 2nd of April, the Central Yorke Football Club hosted the Maitland Crows Cup Carnival for years 5, 6 and 7 female students. Teams from Kadina, Minlaton, Maitland Lutheran School, Moonta, Wallaroo and Central Yorke School competed in the 9-aside round robin tournament. 12 girls put their hand up to represent CYS with pride and finished the day in third position, with four wins and one loss.

Considering some of the girls had their first ever football training on the Monday lunch time in the lead-up to the event, it was fantastic to see the girls play as a team and embody the school values of respect, resilience and relationships. The day was full of many exciting highlights that the girls were more than happy to reflect on and share with other students when they arrived back at school.

Whether it was Molly Rowe kicking 6 goals in the first half of game 1 against Moonta, Elouise Johns kicking the winning goal with 10 seconds to go to defeat Maitland Lutheran School by 2 points, Maggie Moore, possibly the smallest and youngest player on the field, giving away a free kick for a ferocious tackle, or Summer Davies tucking the ball under the arm and bursting out of the midfield to win clearances, the girls truly demonstrated that an individual team will overcome any team of individuals.

I would like to give a huge thankyou to all the parents who came and helped out on the day, in particular our honest goal umpires Chris Rowe, Sam Davies and Gavin Moore. It was truly fantastic to see a new generation of female footballers taking on all aspects of the complexity that the game brings and enjoying having a kick of the footy with their mates
