The Year 2 students have been investigating how muscles and tendons hands move hands. They then made models of their own hands and used the ‘bendy’ property of cardboard to make a hand whose fingers move when strings are pulled.
Students sequenced the steps needed to make the hands, traced, measured and cut out card templates then used hot glue guns to stick on tubing for the strings.
They discovered the tubes needed to be carefully aligned to work properly.
Students then threaded the tubes with string, tied knots and experimented with opening the ‘fingers’ on their hands.
Throughout the projects the class worked safely with a range of tools and it was pleasing to see them sharing ideas and helping each other to complete the task.
Some students gave themselves ‘homework’ and made a second version at home.
