On Wednesday 13th April representatives of Power Community Limited, the community development arm of the Port Adelaide Football Club, visited the students of Central Yorke SAASTA Academy to present a workshop in preparation for their involvement in the Aboriginal Power Cup in Term 2.
During this workshop, students heard from members of the Port Power football team who spoke about the importance of culture to them and how they connected with culture in and out of their commitments to the AFL. The mentors then provided a football training session for the students.
After recess the students were divided in single gender groups and participated in the Power to End Violence Against Women & Empowered programs. The programs focus on raising awareness of violence against women and building young people’s capacity to develop respectful relationships.
Power to End Violence Against Women works with male students to foster healthy attitudes to relationships and to challenge entrenched attitudes that can contribute to gender-based violence. The program also provides the information and skills necessary for young men to make informed choices to prevent violent behaviours in society.
Empowered works with female students with a focus on promoting a positive sense of self and identity. In doing so, the program not only empowers young women, but builds their capacity to understand and address the drivers of violence including warning signs, while providing access to resources for support.
The students were keen contributors to all parts of the day and showed great respect towards the visitors.
