1/2 Design & Technology

The Year 1/2 Class have been investigating rolling toys this term. We started by making simple rolling vehicles then looked at how offsetting an axle on a cylinder would make foot-like movement

Students experimented with connecting straws, skewers and cardboard together. Once this worked smoothly they traced round their shoes on card , cut them out and attached them to the skewers.

We found the ‘rolling-feet’ would move down slopes and with help, along the corridor floor.

Students completed their designs with decoration, extra ‘handles’, and even directions on how to use them.

This unit was great fun and the class developed confidence in adapting designs, using cutting tools and hot-glue guns, troubleshooting rolling issues and sharing resources with others.
