On Thursday October 29th, 23 staff from the Kadina District Office visited CYS Point Pearce Campus and Point Pearce itself to learn more about both the history of the Point Pearce Community and Narungga Culture.

The group was welcomed by Ron Newchurch onto Narungga country in the Cultural Centre, then taken on a tour of the school site by myself.
Children in the R-2 Class performed a song with movements about the significance of belonging to Country, and then shared some of their knowledge of Narungga Language.
Visiting the point
The group then went on a drive to the Point, where Ron Newchurch and Kay Lawrence shared their knowledge and experiences about growing up there. We stopped at the Cattle Yards, Dolly’s Jetty and Butheras Rock to hear them speak. I read a version of the Butheras Rock Dreaming Story to the group. There were a few brown snakes and lots of wombat holes to avoid whilst driving!
BBQ Lunch
Back at the school, the group shared a barbecue lunch with the children at the school, and then returned to the Cultural Centre for a ‘Q and A’ session.
I shared some resources with the group and gave them each a pack to take home. Once again Kay and Ron were able to share lots of relevant information about the history of Point Pearce.
Joann Weckert our District Director thanked all for both organising and attending on the day, and the important significance of days such as this.
Out of the group, around one third of them had never visited our Community before. We thank them for showing an interest. This type of experience is so important in helping to broaden people’s knowledge base, and is an important step towards greater understanding and true Reconciliation.
