Open Girls Football

As part of the Central Yorke Football Academy the girls took part in the School Sport SA Statewide Football competition.

Round one was scheduled for Tuesday the 4th August against Playford International College and Nuriootpa High School. A last minute forfeit from Playford meant that the girls had just the one game for the day.

Being the first real game of football many of the girls have played there were a few nerves going into the match and that showed during the first quarter where Nuriootpa kicked 7 goals to nothing. A quick pep talk at quarter time from coaches Clifford and Whittaker and the girls were ready to give it another go.

The second quarter saw some vigorous tackling, good contested ball and much better team play around the stoppages. Tayla and Amber were getting plenty of the ball and Havanah and Sophie were doing a good job tightening up the backlines. With a much improved effort from all the girls the second quarter only saw Nuriootpa kick 3 goals. Bella and Lily began to get a hold of the ruck work and Ruby and Georgia were tackling well and making life difficult for the opposition in the third quarter. This was by far the best quarter and although we still hadn’t managed to score, Nuriootpa were held to only two goals. Mattea and Jess were fighting hard in the backlines and Sophie and Annabelle were warming up the forward lines in the final quarter. Annabel, Hannah, Claire and Tammie kept fighting hard to the end but unfortunately Nuriootpa were too good for us on the day.

The girls certainly took a lot from the game and hopefully this helps us to continue to improve our footy for future years.
