The 2019 Central Yorke School Showcase Concert was held on Thursday November 7 in the school Performing Arts Centre.
Over 150 family and community members attended along with special invited guests including the Local Member for Narrungga Fraser Ellis, Education Director Joann Weckert and principals from the SYP schools.
Festival Choir
The Combined AAS and CYS Festival Choir opened the evening with the beautiful ‘You, Me and the Wide Open Sky’, a soaring outback inspired ballad. The Choir’s programme was picked from the Festival of Music concert and included ‘When I Grow Up’ from the musical Matilda, the evocative ‘Christchurch’ and the finger clicking ‘Route 66’.
The songs featured talented soloists including CYS students Ashlee Radford, Kira Davies, Maggie Moore, Sophie Davies and Lucy Allen. It was easy to see why both choirs deserved their ‘A’ grade ratings!
Junior Concert Band
The CYS Junior Concert Band performed four short pieces including A Queen medley and the theme from Star Trek. For many students it was their first public performance on their instruments. Well done!
YP Schools Band
The Combined Schools Concert Band opened the second half with the pop hit ‘September’ and a medley of Australian songs. Further pieces included a medley of classical style pieces from the movie ‘Fantasia’ with the band producing a full, bold and dynamic sound which was complemented by the support of community musicians.
The Senior Vocal group showed their skills with ‘A Thousand Years’ and ‘A Million Dreams’ with Zeph Harris and Stephanie Gersch the featured soloists.
Guest Artists
Interspersed between acts were guest artists including Esther Short on clarinet, Dominic Meehan on Alto Saxophone, a vocal piece from Alanna Herd and piano solos from Ruby Barlowa and Eb Churchill. During the evening conductor Debbie Schwartz presented awards for excellence to band and choir members and two special awards to teachers Sarah Townsend and Carol Wilkins for their outstanding service to the band and their mentoring of students.
A huge thank you to all our musicians and their families to the P & F and the CYS staff for your help. Congratulations to Debbie and her team for presenting such an entertaining and professional concert.
