R/1 Design & Technologies – Hats

The R/1 class has been examining hats in their Design & Tech and drama lessons. In Design Tech we looked at different hats and investigated their uses such as being decorative, worn for protection or used as identification.
We made hats from different materials including paper, plastic and cardboard and learned how to measure curved shapes (like our heads!) how  to join cylinders to flat shapes using flanges and how to score, bend and join
thicker material such as corrugated cardboard.

We then made our own fancy top hats, measuring our heads, cutting out  templates and adjusting them for correct fit. In Drama we read the story ‘Old Hat New Hat’ and then mimed carrying, wearing and taking off different hats.
We also wore some real hats and improvised being the different characters  that would wear them.
