Last week CYS was fortunate to host both the Chief Executive of the Department for Education, Professor Martin Westwell and the Minister for Education, Training and Skills, Mr Blair Boyer.
Mr Westwell and Mr Boyer visited Point Pearce on Wednesday February 15. Mr Westwell and Mr Boyer spent time talking with staff, students and community, learning about the strengths and needs of teaching and learning in a rural context. On the Thursday Mr Westwell also visited the CYS Maitland campus and ELC and again spent time understanding our school context, acknowledging our success and getting to know our community.
Mr Westwell shared breakfast with recently appointed CYS teachers who have relocated to our local community. He discussed the pilot Employment Concierge and Country Housing initiative and sought feedback. This initiative was developed to support the attraction and retainment of quality teacher into rural communities and staff feedback has been very positive.
Mr Westwell’s personable approach was well received. He took the time to get to know individuals across each campus and both staff and students felt valued and appreciated.
Having the opportunity to host Mr Westwell and Mr Boyer at Central Yorke School provided a platform to discuss education in a rural context as well as a lens on the future resources needed to ensure contemporary, high quality education which is equitable for all children and young people.
