Growing Great Grains

Over the past two terms, the Year 5/6 classes have been working with the “Growing Great Grains” coordinator Belinda Cray to learn how food is produced and the role that agriculture plays in their everyday lives. Students learned where foods came from and the role that science, technology, engineering and maths plays in sustainable food production. Over the 10-week program the students also explored food producing regions in South Australia, learned how plants adapt to drought and frost, plant growth and development, pest and disease management and how grain is used to make food. The course culminated this week with students examining grains closeup in microscopes and making their own flour and dough.
