Stargazing: World Record Viewing Attempt

Central Yorke School was part of an amazing Australia wide event on the evening of May 23rd. The ABC in partnership with the Australian National University were aiming to smash the Guiness Book of Records for the most people in one country stargazing at the same time. Participants were required to look through a telescope or binoculars for a ten minute period simultaneously.

The event was free but many chose to purchase telescopes provided by the ABC and ANU. The SRC, under the guidance of Shayla Vince and Scott Moore had the BBQ fired up and Parents and Friends support Karen Crawford and Ali Palin sold sold mugs of hot soup. We thank them for this.

Guests were able to watch the ABC broadcast Stargazing Live on a wide screen TV set up on the senior suite verandah. Over 50 people were in attendance with 41 officially registered to be part of the world record attempt. Evidence of the evening has been submitted to the ABC. Thankyou to our steward Hannah Clift, witnesses Jaynelle LeFeuvre and Helen Moloney, timekeepers Emma Westbrook and Courtney Dayman, official photographer and video producer Jodie Ames and to Tim Tuck for his technical expertise. The record has been broken and Central Yorke School should know soon if our event has officially contributed to this. Beth Hector (Deputy Principal)
