Balinese Shadow Puppets (1)

The Year 7 students have just started their new Performing Arts unit looking at ‘Wayang Kulit, a style of shadow puppet theatre popular in Indonesia.

The students have experimented with traditional shadow puppets made from opaque card and this week made translucent puppets using oiled paper.

The puppet characters are from an Indonesian children’s story about a gecko who learns an important life lesson when he complains about fireflies disturbing his sleep.

The students will rehearse and perform the story as a play, using sound FX, traditional Balinese music, and modern lighting technology.
