Reflecting on Hands-On Learning in Pig Husbandry
This term, our Year 9/10 students have dived into the much-anticipated Pig Unit, and it’s been all systems go! From cleaning out the eco shelter to refilling the grain feeder, everyone has pitched in and learned valuable hands-on skills in animal care and farm management.
Each week, students have been busy weighing and maintaining the pigs, who are almost ready for their next stage – heading off to the abattoir. This hands-on experience has been a fantastic opportunity for students to understand the full cycle of ethical livestock production, get some fresh pig air, and work together as a team.
By the end of the term, the pigs were thriving, having gained over 1kg per day thanks to the students’ hard work and commitment.
It was all about learning through doing!
