Building Leadership Through Culture and Education
The South Australian Aboriginal Sports Training Academy (SAASTA) provides Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with engaging educational, sporting and cultural opportunities that support personal growth, leadership and future pathways. At Central Yorke School, SAASTA is offered to students in Years 10–12 who are completing their South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE).
While sport and recreation are central to the program, SAASTA is designed for students who are committed to achieving success in education, developing strong personal values and building positive futures. Students are encouraged to set high expectations for themselves in the areas of attendance, participation, behaviour and academic achievement, becoming role models within the school and wider community.
SACE Learning and Pathways
Students enrolled in SAASTA study academy developed SACE subjects that contribute towards successful completion of the SACE. Learning takes place in a highly supportive environment led by SAASTA teachers, tutors and industry experts, combining classroom learning with practical experiences and leadership development.
The Central Yorke School SAASTA Academy is part of a regional cluster involving students from Central Yorke School, Kadina Memorial School, Moonta Area School and Ardrossan Area School. This structure allows students to build connections with other Aboriginal students across the Yorke Peninsula while participating in shared learning experiences and events.
Performance, Culture and Community
Entry into the academy involves a formal application and interview process, with student attendance, behaviour and academic commitment all considered as part of selection. Once enrolled, students are expected to maintain SAASTA performance indicators and represent the academy with pride through their conduct, participation and uniform standards.
Students participate in curriculum based assessment tasks, specialised sports training and cultural learning activities that strengthen identity, belonging and connection to culture. The program also provides opportunities to participate in major events such as the Aboriginal Power Cup and the SAASTA Shield.
