Year 3 students explored local street libraries for inspiration.
Year 3 students travelled around the Yorke Peninsula as part of their Street Library Learning Expedition, visiting a range of community libraries and examining their purpose, design and accessibility.
The first stop was the Moonta Cubs Library, a children’s library near the playground. Students browsed the books and viewed the nearby Directional Compass Rose, which reflects the region’s mining history and identifies notable South Australian mines.
At The Little Library in the Garden in Kadina, students explored an old refrigerator that had been creatively transformed into a street library outside the church. They considered its design, range of books and accessibility, discussing the features that make a community library welcoming and successful.
The class then visited the colourful Tiddy Widdy Word Wagon, where its decorations, creative design and inviting location prompted discussion about how street libraries can encourage reading and strengthen community connections.
At The Coffee House in Ardrossan, students were challenged to redesign the existing street library. Drawing on their observations from throughout the day, they suggested practical improvements and creative new ideas.
The excursion provided valuable real-world inspiration and encouraged students to think critically about the design and function of street libraries. They will now apply their learning as they begin constructing the Central Yorke School Street Library.
