Year 7/8 Eldercare Project Finish

Our Year 7/8 students welcomed their Eldercare friends to celebrate a heartwarming project that brought generations together through stories, portraits and friendship.

Last week, we were delighted to welcome our friends from Eldercare Village in Maitland to Central Yorke School to see something incredibly special come to life.

Throughout last term, our Year 7/8 students spent time getting to know the Eldercare residents, listening to their stories, learning about their lives and forming genuine connections. Inspired by these conversations, each student created a hand-drawn portrait and wrote the life story of their resident. These became one of the main attractions of our Learning Expedition celebration.

Last week, the residents were finally able to see their portraits and read the stories our students had written about them.

There were laughs, tears, hugs and so much love in the room. Watching the residents recognise themselves in the drawings, read their own stories and share these moments with the students who had taken the time to truly get to know them was incredibly special.

But this project became about so much more than portraits and writing. Our students learned the value of listening, empathy, patience and connection. They discovered that every person has a story worth hearing and that friendships can form between people from completely different generations. In return, our Eldercare residents gave our students their time, wisdom, stories, humour and friendship.

Together, they formed friendships that we know they will remember for a very long time.

The portraits and stories will now be gifted to the residents and brought together in a special book for Eldercare to treasure – a lasting reminder of the beautiful connections created through this experience.

This is what learning can look like when we step beyond the classroom and connect with our community. We are incredibly proud of our Year 7/8 students and so grateful to our Eldercare friends for opening their lives and hearts to us.

Thank you to the staff at Eldercare for making this opportunity possible. We cannot wait to visit again throughout the year and continue building these wonderful connections.

A very special chapter of our Learning Expedition that we will never forget.
