Ballywire Farm Visit

Term 1 saw the JP students busy reading ‘Who Sank the Boat?’ by Pamela Allen in English and completing a range of cross-curriculum activities around the story.
To finish the handsa-on unit they went on an excursion to Ballywire Farm, an interactive farm sanctuary situated 11 kms out of Yorketown, to see the characters from the book – donkey, sheep, cow, pig and mouse.

Off to the farm

On Monday May 6 at 9 o’clock sharp the students eagerly boarded the bus, stopping at the fantastic Minlaton playground for fruit and a quick play before heading off.

Once we arrived we were greeted by owners Peter and Chris, who very kindly showed us through the museum sheds and introduced us to all the animals they have rescued – including their newest arrivals three very noisy lambs.

Friendly animals

We were then followed around by all the friendly animals as they eagerly awaited feeding, including Heather (the very noisy and clever donkey who made sure she received a carrot from everyone).

The students were treated to a round of mini golf and only a few golf balls ended up in the paddocks before we stopped for lunch.

Then we just had time for a group photo before climbing aboard the bus for the trip back.

Thank yous

  • To the lovely owners, Peter and Chris for kindly opening the farm just for us and sharing your farming knowledge.
  • Mr Bridgman for driving the bus to and from the farm.
  • Our supervisors – Mrs Westbrook, Mr Tuck, Mrs Smart for enabling the excursion to happen
  • And lastly the students for their enthusiasm and manners throughout the trip. It is always lovely to hear that we were the best group they have ever had through the farm!
