Year 7/8 Vintage Art Museum

A cross-curricular Learning Expedition connected students with local residents through biography, accessibility and portraiture.

At Central Yorke School’s Open Day, Year 7/8 students showcased their Learning Expedition by transforming their classroom into a vintage-inspired art museum.

Throughout the project, students developed friendships with residents of Eldercare Maitland, listening to their stories, asking thoughtful questions and learning about the lives of people within their community.

Drawing on these conversations, students became biographers and wrote detailed life stories in English. Their work celebrated each resident’s experiences while exploring how accessibility had influenced different stages of their lives. This complemented their HASS learning about barriers, inclusion and the importance of creating communities where everyone belongs.

Working with Miss Charlotte Nixon, students also created portraits of the residents, capturing their personalities and stories through art.

Open Day visitors were invited to explore the museum, view the portraits and read the accompanying biographies. The exhibition brought together English, HASS and The Arts in a meaningful celebration of the Eldercare residents and their experiences.

The school extends its thanks to the residents and staff of Eldercare Maitland for welcoming the students and sharing their stories.
