Agriculture (7-10)

Central Yorke School has extensive grounds including several hectares of school farm. Students from Birth to Year 12 are involved in agricultural learning, with primary students engaged in the Garden to Plate program and secondary students participating in Agriculture lessons and courses. The school employs two Agriculture teachers, along with a groundsman who supports the upkeep and management of the farm facilities.

Agriculture at CYS provides students with practical experiences, scientific understanding and opportunities to develop real world skills connected to one of the region’s key industries. Learning is hands on, engaging and closely linked to the local community and environment.

7–8 Agriculture

Building Skills and Confidence

Students in Years 7 and 8 study Agriculture as part of their Science curriculum for two lessons each week. The course combines classroom learning with practical activities that build confidence and introduce students to life on the farm.

Students explore topics including farm safety, incubating chicken eggs, wool production and processing, cattle and sheep production, field crops, farm machinery and plant science. Practical experiences help students develop teamwork, responsibility and problem solving skills while working with animals and equipment.

9–10 Agriculture

Hands On Learning and Industry Skills

In Years 9 and 10, students further develop their practical skills and agricultural knowledge through three lessons per week. Learning becomes increasingly independent and hands on, with students working directly with livestock, crops and soils while also learning to operate the school tractor and prepare paddocks for seeding.

Topics include insects and agriculture, lamb management, poultry and pig production, soil science, field crops and sheep and wool production. Students also have opportunities to represent the school at the prestigious Royal Adelaide Show through livestock competitions, continuing a proud tradition of success in goat and steer events.

Senior Agriculture

Joining the Yorkes Ag Alliance

Senior Agriculture at CYS is delivered through the Yorkes Ag Alliance (YAA), a partnership between Central Yorke School and Maitland Lutheran School. The Alliance brings students together to study Agriculture through a highly practical, industry connected learning program.

Students participate in hands on experiences involving tractor safety, machinery maintenance, livestock care and agricultural science while developing leadership, teamwork and independent work skills. Industry partnerships with local farmers and agricultural businesses provide authentic learning opportunities and valuable career pathways.

A major focus of the program is livestock preparation and competition, with students regularly competing at regional shows and the Royal Adelaide Show. In 2025, the Yorkes Ag Alliance achieved outstanding success at the Royal Adelaide Show, earning multiple awards against schools from across the state.

The program helps prepare students for further study, training and employment in agriculture, agribusiness, animal production and related industries.
