Aboriginal STEM Conference

Four CYS students joined more than 770 First Nations students from across South Australia for two days of STEM learning, cultural experiences and connection in Adelaide.

Four of our students were fortunate to represent CYS at the STEM Aboriginal Learners Congress, held over two days at Adelaide Oval and other Adelaide venues.

The event brought together more than 770 First Nations students from over 180 Department for Education schools across South Australia, celebrating the ways culture and community can be intertwined with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Our students enjoyed a fantastic first day, taking part in activities exploring culture through food and art, as well as a Cooking on Country activity. They also had the opportunity to hear from several keynote speakers and presenters who kept everyone engaged, inspired and entertained.

It was a wonderful day filled with learning, culture, connection and plenty of fun, and the students were already looking forward to what Day 2 had in store.

On the second day, our students heard from more inspiring First Nations speakers working in STEM fields.

The girls then walked through the city to Adelaide Botanic High School, where they participated in an Aqua-Equilibrium activity. The challenge required them to distribute water to three different areas of a town while ensuring that the majority of their grid was utilised.

The girls put their problem-solving skills to work and absolutely nailed it, successfully distributing water throughout the town with enough pressure to fill all three buckets equally.

The Congress concluded with a fantastic performance by First Nations music group Dem Mob, who had the whole crowd on their feet!

It was a wonderful two days in Adelaide, and our girls developed many new STEM skills and understandings that they can bring back to CYS and build upon throughout the rest of the year.

A huge thank you to Mr Muirhead for accompanying our students and supporting them throughout this fantastic experience. We really appreciate it!
